Martin Pitches Three-Hitter, Preserves Shutout of Catholic

The #2 seeded United States Merchant Marine Academy Mariners (20-13, 12-6) defeated the #3 seeded Catholic University of America Cardinals (24-15, 11-7) by a score of 4-0 in the first round of the double elimination Landmark Conference Playoff Tournament.

Kings Point got on the board early when sophomore infielder Nick Kopacka singled up the middle to drive in sophomore infielder Danny Collins for first run of the game.  In the sixth inning the Mariners caught a break when sophomore infielder Warren Hartman crossed home plate on a basses loaded wild pitch thrown by Cardinals sophomore hurler Andrew Carroll.

In the eighth inning, Kings Point tacked on two insurance runs taking advantage of a leadoff walk by freshman outfielder Kiel Silva followed by an error charged to Cardinals infielder Colin McCarthy.  That would be all the scoring the Mariners would need to preserve a 4-0 shutout victory of Catholic.

Senior Andy Martin pitched masterfully allowing three hits, one walk, and striking out one in a complete game shutout of Catholic.  Collins was the only Mariner to collect multiple hits, collecting two singles, an RBI, a run scored, and an intentional walk.

The tournament will continue Sunday, May 6th pitting the winners and losers of today's games against each other.  The Mariners will face off against #4 seeded Drew University at 12:30 PM (20-19, 9-9) who defeated top seeded Moravian College (26-15, 14-4) earlier this afternoon.  If USMMA can win that game, they will have the inside track to capturing the Landmark Conference Championship on Monday, May 7th.  Live stats and updates for all games can be found at:
