KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy were unable to complete the series sweep of Drew University, falling 7-3 on Sunday in Kings Point. The Mariners fall to 13-7 overall and 7-2 in Landmark Conference play while the Rangers improve to 10-9 overall and 2-4 in conference matchups.
The Rangers opened the scoring with a run in the top of the first, but they did the most damage in the top of the second, posting a four-run frame off a two-run home run by Kaplon and two costly Mariners errors. Kaplon added another RBI on the day in the top of the third as the Rangers continued to pad their 6-0 lead over the Mariners.
The Mariners would fight back in the bottom of the third, cutting the Rangers lead in half thanks to a sac fly from sophomore Warren Hartmann, and an RBI double from freshman Cameron Stadele. Sophomore Danny Collins also reached on an error by the Rangers' shortstop, allowing Stadele to score from third.
But that would be all the Mariners could muster, as the rangers went on to win, 7-3. Stadele was 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Jacob Wood also recorded two hits, finishing 2-4 on the day. Sophomore John Martin took the loss for the Mariner, allowing seven runs, five of them earned, on seven hits over 9 innings of work. Ken Myers earned the win for the Rangers, surrendering three runs, two earned, while scattering five hits over six innings.
Next up for the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Mariners will host Landmark-Conference-leading Moravian College for three games. The series opener will be on Friday at 4:00 p.m. in Kings Point.
