Collins Impressive in Shutout of Bears

KINGS POINT, N.Y. - The United States Merchant Marine Academy got eight shutout innings from junior Danny Collins en route to a 4-0 victory over St. Joseph's College in Kings Point on Thursday. The Mariners improve to 11-6 overall and 5-1 in Landmark Conference play while the Bears fall to 7-13 on the season.

Danny Collins gave the Mariners his best start of the season, scattering five hits and striking out six over eight shutout innings. Collins was perfect through four and a third, until an infield single by freshman Vinny Rossi broke it up in the top of the fifth inning.  Collins kept the Bears from getting a runner in scoring position until the top of the eighth inning, giving the Mariners hitters more than enough time to build up a lead.

They did just that, jumping out in front in the bottom of the second inning. With runners on the corners, freshman Jacob Wood's sac fly put the Mariners on the board and an RBI single by freshman Keil Silva gave the Mariners a 2-0 lead over the Bears.

The Mariners would add two more in the bottom of the sixth inning. Senior Andy Martin started things off with a single and later advanced to third on a double by sophomore Warren Hartmann. Sophomore John Martin knocked them both in with a two-out two-run single to give the Mariners a healthy 4-0 lead.

Four runs would be more than enough for the Mariners who went on to win, 4-0 over the Bears. Earning the win for the Mariners was Collins, while sophomore Donny Pagano took the loss for the Bears, allowing four runs on eight hits over seven innings of work.
