Mariners Explode for 20 Runs, Win First Home Game of the Season
KINGS POINT, N.Y. – The United States Merchant Marine Academy cruised to victory in their first home game of the season with a 20-2 rout of City College of New York at Lower Roosevelt Field in Kings Point, NY on Monday. With the win, the Mariners improve to 2-4 overall while the CCNY Beavers fall to 0-13 on the season.
The Mariners wasted no time in jumping onto the scoreboard, scoring 5 runs in each of the first two frames. Senior Andy Martin, sophomore Danny Collins, and freshman Jacob Wood each had RBI singles while Nicholas Kopecka added a two-run double in the inning. The big blow in the second frame was a 2-run blast over the left field fence by last season's rookie of the year, Warren Hartmann.
The Mariners were hardly finished as they put up a third five-run frame in the bottom of the fifth. The Beavers took out starting pitcher Yoribaldis Olivo and replaced him with reliever Dilson Paulino. Paulino struggled to find the strike zone in his one inning of work, walking six of the 11 batters he faced. Paulino walked the bases full two separate times, walked in two runs, and gave up RBI singles to freshman Keil Silva and Hartmann in the inning. When the Beavers finally recorded the third out, they found themselves in an 18-2 hole to the Mariners.
The Mariners would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth off a 2-run homer from Andy Martin. Martin was 3-5 on the day with 4 RBI's.
Mariner's starting pitcher of the game, junior Dustin Thomsen earned the win, giving up 2 runs and 6 hits while striking out 6 over 7 innings of work. Olivo took the loss for the Beavers, lasting 3 innings in which he surrendered 17 of the Mariners' 23 hits and allowing 13 runs in the game.
Next up for the United States Merchant Marine Academy, the Mariners hit the road for four games beginning with a contest at William Paterson University on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
