Men’s Lacrosse Cruises To 22-7 Road Win At Drew

MADISON, N.J. (Feb. 21, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's lacrosse team moved to 2-0 on the season with a 22-7 road win over Drew on Saturday afternoon at Ranger Stadium. The Mariners used dominant second and third quarters to seize control, scoring 14-of-15 goals after an early deficit to take full control. With the victory, USMMA improves to 2-0 overall, while the Rangers fall to 1-1.

Game Link Five Mariners posted four or more points in the win. Junior Owen Behr (Vestavia Hills, Ala.) led the way with seven points on four goals and three assists, while senior Owen Barcus (Annapolis, Md.) added six points behind four goals and two helpers. Senior Kyle Hennelly (Dacula, Ga.) recorded five points (two goals, three assists), and freshmen Ryan Sullivan (Warwick, N.Y.) and Nathan Mangus (Sugar Land, Texas) both finished with four points – Sullivan scoring once and dishing out three assists and Mangus finding the back of the net three times and adding one assist.

Senior William Badeer (Pittsburgh, Pa.) contributed two goals and one helper and freshman Dylan Sullivan (Warwick, N.Y.) also added three points on two goals and one assist. Sophomore Landon Locke (Midlothian, Va.) and freshman Nathan Sharp (Sherwood, Ore.) rounded out the Mariners' multi-point scorers with two points each – Locke with two tallies and Sharp with one goal and one assist.

Defensively, Behr and senior Christian Meyers (Miller Place, N.Y.) each registered two caused turnovers to share the team lead. At the face-off X, sophomore Tucker Kuhn (Towson, Md.) controlled possession throughout, winning 19-of-26 draws and collecting 11 ground balls as part of the Mariners' 25-8 advantage in draws. USMMA also held a 46-28 edge in ground balls overall. Sophomore Burke Tribble (Wilmington, N.C.) and senior Michael Hofstetter (Deer Park, N.Y.) each picked up four ground balls, while multiple Mariners contributed to a balanced effort in the middle of the field.

In goal, senior Tucker Swinerton (Weston, Fla.) earned the win with four saves in just under 45 minutes of action. Junior Julian Garcia (Lakeway, Texas) and sophomore Jack Stehlik (Hood River, Ore.) each saw time in relief as the Mariners limited Drew to 13 shots on goal in the contest.

The afternoon did not begin smoothly for USMMA. Drew scored three of the first four goals to take a 3-1 lead late in the opening quarter. The Mariners responded with composure, stringing together a 4-0 run to close the first period. Goals from Badeer, Behr and Barcus, along with a man-up strike from Behr, flipped the margin to 5-3 by the end of the quarter.

The second quarter turned the game decisively. USMMA outscored the Rangers 7-0 in the period, beginning with a man-up goal from Barcus. Hennelly, Dylan Sullivan and Locke fueled the surge, while late finishes from Behr and Mangus extended the lead to 12-3 at halftime. The Mariners capitalized on extra-man opportunities, finishing 3-for-4 on the day, and consistently won possessions off the draw to prevent any Drew response.

Any lingering doubt was erased in the third. After the Rangers opened the half with a man-up goal, USMMA answered immediately and then ripped off six goals in under nine minutes. Badeer, Barcus, sophomore William Schipfer (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Locke and Mangus all found the back of the net during the stretch as the lead ballooned to 19-4 entering the fourth quarter. The sustained scoring run reflected both efficiency in settled offense and defensive pressure that forced quick turnovers.

With the outcome in hand, the fourth quarter allowed the Mariners to continue rotating personnel while maintaining control. Ryan Sullivan, Sharp and Mangus added insurance goals as USMMA finished with advantages in shots (51-28), shots on goal (32-13) and ground balls (46-28).

Drew was led by Riley Zeer with three points on a goal and two assists, while Nick Carabetta and Joseph Carabetta scored two goals apiece. Joe Barnish made 10 saves in goal in the losing effort.

The Mariners return to action next weekend when they host Western Connecticut State on Saturday, Feb. 28, beginning at 12-noon at Tomb Field.
