KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Oct. 6, 2026) – The U.S. Merchant Marine Academy men's soccer team tied Mount St. Mary 2-2 in Skyline Conference action on Tuesday night at Bartoszek Field. The Mariners moved to 5-2-6 (4-0-3 Skyline), while the Knights' record went to 2-6-2 (2-1-2 Skyline).

Game Link

Merchant Marine broke through in the 12th minute when junior Cal Lutz (South Pasadena, Calif.) took advantage of a fortuitous bounce and fired a right-footed turnaround shot off the right post and into the back of the net for an early 1-0 lead. Mount St. Mary answered in the 18th minute when Guilherme Martins scored off a feed from William Zelaya to even the contest at 1-1. The Blue and Gray nearly regained the lead in the 23rd minute when senior Andrew Jung (Fairfax, Va.) had a point-blank opportunity, but Knights goalkeeper Landon Mabe turned it away.

Freshman Drew Coyne (Harrington, N.J.) followed with a left-footed shot that just missed wide right in the 28th minute. USMMA threatened again in the 38th minute when sophomore Charlie Safe (Boise, Idaho) caught Mabe by surprise with a right-footed blast, but the Knights' goalkeeper recovered to make the save and keep the contest deadlocked at 1-1 heading into halftime.

Merchant Marine wasted little time regaining the lead out of the break. In the 47th minute, junior Colin Robertson (Milford, Mich.) found the back of the net off a corner-kick feed from sophomore Jackson Justice (Winchester, Va.) to put the hosts back in front, 2-1. The Knights responded again in the 68th minute as Martins recorded his second goal of the night off a through ball feed from Zelaya at the top of the 18 to pull Mount St. Mary even at 2-2. Mount St. Mary looked to take its first lead in the 76th minute, but Isaac Vargas sent an attempt wide left.

Merchant Marine almost went back in front in the 79th minute when Safe put a shot on target, but Mabe made the save to keep the game tied. The Knights generated one final opportunity in the 84th minute when Martins looked for his third goal of the night, but his attempt sailed high as the contest would end in a 2-2 draw.

The physical conference battle featured 17 combined fouls. Merchant Marine held a 13-10 advantage in shots and controlled the corners 7-3.

Senior Ethan Howell (Alexandria, Va.) made five saves in goal for the Mariners, while Mabe recorded four stops for the Knights.

The Mariners return to action on Sunday, Oct. 11, when they travel to take on Yeshiva in Skyline Conference action at 5:30 p.m. in Teaneck, N.J.
