SYRCAUSE, N.Y. (Nov. 22, 2025) – The USMMA wrestling team saw six Mariners reach the podium on Saturday, including one bracket champion, en route to a fourth-place team finish at the New York State Championships. Merchant Marine compiled 74.5 team points. There were also brackets for freshmen and sophomores, where an additional four Mariners placed in the top-six.

Freshman
Viviano Gutierrez (La Habra, Calif.) won the 165-pound bracket with four victories, including one pin.

Sophomore
Maxwell Corral (Oak Forest, Ill.) came in second place at 197. He won his first two matches via a major decision in his first bout and a big sudden victory triumph over the fourth-ranked wrestler in the nation in the weight class, Carson Licastri of Oneonta State. The sophomore dropped the first place match by decision to an opponent from Ithaca.

Freshman
Andrew Huesgen (Shillington, Pa.) reached the third-place bout, compiling a 4-1 record with a pin and a technical fall, but the third-place bout didn't happen because his opponent reached his bout limit for the day.

Sophomore
Porter Gresko (Sparks, Nev.) went 3-2 on the day with a fall and a major decision to finish fourth at 184. In the same bracket, classmate
Paul Barrett (Longmeadow, Mass.) also finished 3-2, picking up a pin and a tech fall on the day. Fellow sophomore
Logan Weaver (Suwanee, Ga.) garnered a 4-2 record with a major decision en route to a fifth-place showing in the 157-pound bracket.

In the freshman/sophomore brackets, sophomore
Giacomo Smith (Whitefield, Maine) came in second at 174 after going 3-1 with two technical falls and classmate
Colby Cloutier (Wrentham, Mass.) placed third in the same bracket with a 5-1 record with three pins. Freshman
Aidan Dugan (Washington Township, N.J.) went 4-1 at 184 to come in third place and freshman
Dylan Rohn (Knoxville, Tenn.) boasted a 5-1 record but reached his limit to finish in the 5th/6th place slot.

Up next, the Mariners will take part in York (Pa.)'s New Standard Invitational Dec. 5-6. Action gets underway on Friday, Dec. 5, at 3 p.m. and will continue at 8 a.m. on Saturday morning, Dec. 6, at the Spartans' M&T Bank Field House.
