The 2011 season marked Tom Gill’s 21st as the head coach
of the lacrosse program at the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Since
his arrival at Kings Point, he has led the program to seven
conference championships, seven ECAC Metro NY/NJ Championship
appearances, six consecutive Maritime Tournament crowns between
1994-1999 and two appearances in the NCAA Tournament. The Academy
named him the recipient of the Coach “O” Coach of the
Year Award in 1998 and 2007. Gill has also coached a total of four
All-Americans and two NCAA statistical champions at the Academy. In
his 20 seasons, Gill has guided the Mariners to a record of
153-139, while his overall coaching ledger stands at 198-172.
After winning what was then a school record 12 games in 2006, Gill
led the Mariners in 2007 to their best season in school history.
The program set a school record by winning 13 games and made its
first appearance in the NCAA Tournament after winning the Skyline
Conference Tournament, 12-11, over then-No. 15 nationally-ranked
Stevens Tech. The Ducks’ loss to the Mariners snapped their
58-game winning streak against conference opponents which dated
back to 2000. For his efforts, Gill was named the Skyline
Conference Coach of the Year and the Academy’s Coach of the
Year.
Prior to arriving at Kings Point, Gill coached the Devils of
Farleigh Dickinson University-Madison from 1984-88, where he was
45-33 in five seasons and won an ECAC Championship. He has also
served as an assistant coach at Cornell, Duke and Hofstra. Gill
played for the N.Y./N.J. Saints of the professional National
Lacrosse League during its inaugural season of 1983.
Gill serves on various championship and governing bodies. In 1994,
1998 and 2002, Gill was a member of the USA Team Selection
Committee, and served as Co-Chairman in 2002. From 1984-88, Gill
was on the Rules Committee as the Division III representative of
the United States Federal/State Lacrosse Association. For 10 years
between 1984-94, Gill served as the Chairman of the USILA League
Sanctioning Committee. Then, from 1994-2004, he was the Secretary
of the U.S. Lacrosse Coaches Council. Gill is one of the founding
members of the Intercollegiate Men’s Lacrosse Coaches
Association and has served on the executive board since 2004. In
addition, Gill was on the NCAA Championship Committee from
2006-2010. Moreover, he serves as a board member of the Long Island
Metro Lacrosse Association, a post he has held since 1992. Overseas
and abroad, Gill was an assistant coach on the Ireland
international team from 2001-2009.
Gill earned his bachelor’s degree at Hofstra University in
1978 and was also a four-year letter winner with its men’s
lacrosse program. He earned his master’s degree in education
administration from the University of North Carolina and
subsequently earned a second master’s in education at Hofstra
as well as his school supervisory certificate.
In addition to his coaching duties, Gill also acts as an Assistant
Athletics Director at the Academy for Internal Assessment. He
currently resides in Levittown, N.Y. with his wife, Eileen, and
son, Brian.
