Steve Hayn joined the United States Merchant Marine Academy in August 2014 as the head coach for the men’s basketball program. He comes to the Academy from Dowling College (Oakdale, N.Y.) where he spent the past eight years as the Golden Lions’ head coach.

Coach Hayn finished the 2013-14 season at Dowling with a 22-7 record, East Coast Conference Coach of the Year honors, All-Met Writers Division II Coach of the Year honors, and a trip to the Division II ECC post-season tournament semifinals. Prior to coaching at Dowling College, Hayn spent five seasons as the head coach at Stevens Institute of Technology (Hoboken, N.J.). In his last season at Stevens Tech, Coach Hayn finished with a 15-12 record, the school’s first trip to the Skyline Conference


semifinals, and the second highest win total in school history.

From 1999-2001 he was the head coach at the State University of New York at Fredonia (Fredonia, N.Y.). Hayn’s other college basketball coaching experiences include being an assistant coach at Central Connecticut State University (New Britain, Conn.) from 1996-99, and at Genesee Community College (Batavia, N.Y.) from 1995-96. He was also the head coach for the varsity basketball team at Port Jefferson High School on Long Island from 1993-95.

Hayn earned his bachelor’s degree in Liberal Studies from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1991. He graduated with a master’s degeree in Special Education from C.W. Post in 1993. Hayn played basketball at Stony Brook from 1989-91, including being a team captain from 1990-91. Prior to joining Stony Book, Hayn played basketball from 1988-89 at Union College.

He currently resides in Brooklyn.
