John Fitzgerald, in his 19th year as the Associate Head Coach of the Mariners, brings a wealth of coaching and administrative experience to the Blue and Gray. Since his arrival, the Mariners have thrived as a regional power.
A college coach with 25 years of experience, Fitzgerald joined forces with Coach Smolens, and since they have teamed up, the Mariners have amassed a 228-100-20 record. This includes four conference championships, five NCAA appearances – including one Sweet 16 and one Elite 8 appearance - and placing six All-Americans. He was also a member of the 2007 Landmark Conference Coaching Staff of the Year.
Fitzgerald’s experiences include being selected as 2004 NSCAA/Adidas Northeast Regional Assistant Coach of the Year, former Head Coach of Long Island Lady Rough Riders (leading the team to the 1997 W-League National Championship Title), 1997 Newsday Coach of the Year, selected as 1998 “W” League All-Star Select Team Head Coach, member of the Women’s U.S. Region I Select Team staff (1986, 2007), Eastern NY State Olympic Development Coach (boys and girls) 1986-1997, and Assistant Men’s coach at Farmingdale State 1990-96.
Currently, Fitzgerald also works for the globally recognized professional club New York Cosmos, where he serves as the Director of Coaching of the Training and Development Program, as well as the Assistant Coach of the club’s reserve team – Cosmos B – 2015 National Premier Soccer League National Champions and 2016 NPSL Conference Champions. He is also the NSCAA State Director for the Long Island region, an NSCAA National Staff Instructor and Director of Coaching Education for the Long Island Jr. Soccer League.
Having earned his bachelor’s degree in business majoring in Organizational Management from St. Joseph’s (N.Y.), Fitzgerald is also a graduate of Farmingdale State (AS in Criminal Justice) where he was team captain. He possesses an NSCAA Premier Diploma, NSCAA Director of Coaching Diploma, and owns a USSF “A” coaching license.
He currently resides in Smithtown, N.Y., with his wife, Elizabeth, and their children, Erin and Sean.
