Over 75 Midshipmen-Athletes Earn Academic Stars For Final Term Of 2017-18

KINGS POINT, N.Y. (Aug. 7, 2018) – The United States Merchant Marine Academy honored Midshipmen from the Classes of 2019, 2020 and 2021 who earned Gold and Silver Academic Stars for the final term of the 2017-18 academic year on Monday in a ceremony at Barney Square. Among the 180 Midshipmen that received Academic Stars were over 75 student-athletes. 

Over 35 Gold Stars were awarded to student-athletes who obtained a GPA over 3.50 with no course failures in the term, while over 40 Silver Stars were awarded to student-athletes who obtained a GPA between 3.25-3.49 with no course failures during the term. 

Football led the way among all teams, as they had a total of 17 student-athletes honored, including 12 from the Class of 2020. Baseball garnered 11 total and boasted six from the Class of 2019, while wrestling and men's swimming & diving rounded out the top three programs on the men's side with 10 honorees apiece - both teams had six members of the Class of 2021 honored each. 

On the women's side, the cross country/track & field programs and the lacrosse team both had six recipients apiece.

Members of the departed Class of 2018 were not included in the ceremony. The next Academic Stars ceremony honoring the Gold and Silver Star recipients from the first term of 2018-19 is slated for December.
