Four Mariners Selected to Winter All-Academic Team
Kings Point, NY – The following
United States Merchant Marine Academy student-athletes were
recognized by the Landmark Conference for their exceptional
performance athletically and academically during the 2012-13 winter
season:
Gretchen Holoubek (Women’s Indoor Track &
Field) - Holoubek earned a spot on the All-Landmark Conference
second team with her academy record breaking 5K run at Landmark
Conference Championships. She was also a member of the 4x400m
relay, which set a new academy record, and finished fourth overall
at conference championships, helping Merchant Marine place ahead of
another Landmark opponent for the first time ever. She is an
Academic Gold Star recipient and an ECAC qualifier in the 1K.
Tyler McDaniel (Men’s Indoor Track &
Field) – McDaniel was a member of the 2013 Landmark
Conference Indoor Championship winning 4x200m relay which helped
Merchant Marine place third as a team at Landmark Conference
Championships for the third consecutive season. Individually,
McDaniel scored for the Mariners finishing sixth in the 200m at
conference championships; currently holding the ninth best 200m
mark in the conference this season. He is also an Academic
Silver Star recipient and an ECAC qualifier.
Chris Scott (USMMA, Men’s Swimming &
Diving) - Along with helping Merchant Marine win four consecutive
Landmark Conference Championships in his four years at the academy,
Scott is also an Academic Gold Star recipient. He placed
first at Landmark Conference Championships in the 400 IM and second
in the 200 IM. In addition to recently being named to the
Landmark Conference Honor Roll, Scott was also a member of the
USMMA record breaking 400 Medley Relay team and qualified for NCAAs
as a part of the 400 Freestyle relay.
Kristina Walz (USMMA, Women’s
Basketball) - Walz started 24 games for the Mariners, averaging 6.5
PPG and 5.7 RPG in 2012-13; helping Merchant Marine achieve 12 wins
for the first time since the 2008-09 campaign. She is an
Academic Gold Star recipient, an ECAC Robbins Scholar Athlete Award
winner, and was recently named to the Landmark Conference Honor
Roll.
The Landmark Conference selects 32 student-athletes each season to
receive All-Academic Team Honors. Eligible student athletes
could compete in any of the Landmark winter sports and must be a
sophomore or older with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA.
