Towson, MD -- Junior Phil Walker (Men’s Lacrosse) and freshman Tomas Sanchez (Men’s Track and Field) were selected men’s lacrosse offensive player and men’s track athlete of the week in their respective sports by the Landmark Conference earlier this afternoon.
Walker (East Falmouth, MA) notched eight goals on 12 shots last week for a shooting percentage of 66.7%. He also added a pair of assists to help Merchant Marine go 2-0 on the week with a non-conference win against Bryn Athyn and a Landmark victory over Drew. His goal in the fourth quarter against Drew was vital in Merchant Marine staving off a Rangers' comeback attempt.
Sanchez (Okinawa, Japan) was the overall 800m meet winner of 60 competitors in the New Jersey Invitational hosted by TCNJ. He won on the home stretch by outkicking professional Scott March from Central Park Track Club with a time of 1:54.58. His time met the ECAC qualifying mark and was the fastest time run in the Landmark Conference this year; ranking 41st in Division-III. Sanchez then came back in the 4x400m relay with a split of 49.2s for a team that ran 3:27.93, the second fastest time in the conference this year.
Walker and Sanchez are the fifth and sixth USMMA athletes to be recognized as players of the week during the spring 2013 season.
Both the men’s lacrosse and track and field teams will be in action next weekend as lacrosse looks to clinch a Landmark Conference playoff berth at Washington & Jefferson and track & field will be competing at the Greyhound Invitational.
